Broken Foot? Palm Trees & Crutches // Singer Island, FL

Nov 9, 2019 | Travel, Vlog

The doctors say it’s broken. After an x-ray and an MRI, the doctors theorize that Sarah’s foot has either a bruised bone or a hairline fracture. Either way she’s grounded from dance and immobilized. It’s basically the worst thing possible for a dancer – jail time with no parole to dance.

It’s also the last thing we wanted to hear before leaving for a tropical beach resort near West Palm Beach. We were staying at Marriott’s Ocean Pointe in Singer Island, FL.

The World Is More Challenging When You’re Handicapped

Now it’s not the worst thing in the world to hop around on one foot in a tropical paradise, but it’s definitely a major challenge. Simple tasks become almost impossible. How would Sarah be able to swim with this massive medical fracture boot on her ankle? How would she get around the massive property with the long sidewalks. What about the sandy walk down to the water on the beach?

All good questions.

No matter what happened, we were determined to make the most of our time. We also told ourselves that we should make a game of it. How could we still have fun even with a handicap? This injury had opened our eyes to the challenging world of traveling while handicapped. Or doing any normal, everyday tasks for that matter.

The Right Tools for the Job

At home we always keep a pair of crutches around that we bought at a yard sale for $1, just in case. Not like we plan on hurting ourselves mind you, but if it happens, a pair of crutches are extremely helpful!

What was even more helpful was buying one of those knee walker scooters that turns a person moving at a snail’s pace into a speed racer! The one we bought was even a pretty white and blue color that Sarah kept getting compliments on. Ha!

To make sure Sarah could get around, we brought both the amazing little knee scooter in addition to the crutches.

Staying Positive When Life Comes At You

No matter how careful you are in life, things happen. You get hurt either emotionally or in this case physically. The key is to stay positive and keep going. What other choice do we have? We’re gifted with this amazing life and are so lucky to be alive!

A few tips for staying positive when bad things happen:

  • CHALLENGE – Instead of facing problems, take them as challenges to solve and overcome. Who doesn’t love a good creative challenge?
  • HAVE MULTIPLE HOBBIES – Without editing our Seeking Saturdays videos, Sarah would have been pretty depressed not being able to dance. It would have been a difficult month without having another hobby to fall back on.
  • GRATITUDE – It’s hard to be angry and grateful at the same time. Practice being grateful for the things that are going right in your life.
  • ABUNDANCE MINDSET – This is a difficult one. Convince yourself that the future will be bright. It gives you something to work towards and look forward to.

The Spectacle of a Young Handicapped Girl

Everywhere we went we noticed people looking at us. Not in a bad way, but in a noticing way. Some people were downtrodden as they looked down at Sarah’s ankle while others didn’t want to make eye contact. Others chimed in with a sad “I know exactly what you’re going through.”

Kids reactions are always the best. The resort had these amazing hydraulic chair lifts that raise and lower you in the pool so when we used them we’d hear kids begging their parents, “I want to ride it!”

Enjoying the Challenge

The Marriott Ocean Pointe in Singer Island was a very easy resort to enjoy while handicapped. No matter where we went, there was something interesting to see or enjoy and all the workers were nice.

We’d park the scooter near the main bar and listen to live Latin music, roll around the wide sidewalks up to cute wooden swings near the beach, and enjoyed the pool and jacuzzis that had hydraulic chair lifts.

Staying positive and looking at the situation as a fun challenge to overcome helped tremendously to make it a fun trip. If anything, it opened our eyes to the challenges a lot of people have while living every day with a handicap. We’re all so fortunate.

Back to Dance!

After getting home, Sarah’s doctors gave her the green light to get out of the boot and get back on her feet. It wasn’t a major fracture thankfully! It ended up being either a minor break that healed quickly or allergies causing inflammation in her foot.

Either way, we’ll always look back on our trip to Singer Island as a fun memory. Until next time!
